Weekend SIL Renovations
We're getting one of our new SIL homes in Armidale ready before it opens, and the team spent the weekend building raised garden beds.
Each participant will get their own veggie patch to grow whatever they like. It's a hands-on way to build everyday skills like routine, responsibility, and independence. Staff can also put up name labels, planting guides, and watering schedules on the walls to help support that.
The home is currently vacant and we want it to feel like somewhere people actually want to be before anyone moves in.
Why Garden Beds?
Growing your own vegetables might seem like a small thing, but for our participants it's a meaningful way to practice independence. Planning what to plant, remembering to water, watching things grow, and then actually eating what you've grown. That's real capacity building.
What's Next
We've got garden beds on both sides of the outdoor area. The plants in the middle are decorative, and participants will get to plant around them and personalise the space however they like.
If you or someone you know is looking for SIL in the New England region, we'd love to chat. Head to our website or call 1300 851 190.
